Enhancing biology education in secondary schools through effective use instructional materials in Jemaa local government area of Kaduna State

Abstract
This study investigated Enhancing
Biology Education in Secondary schools Through Effective use Instructional
Materials in Jemaa Local Government Area of Kaduna State. The study
adopted the descriptive survey research design. Data were collected from
Biology students using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using
descriptive statistical methods. Biology involves some abstract concepts and
practical processes that require concrete representation to facilitate
meaningful learning. The findings revealed that the use of instructional
materials such as charts, models, specimens, laboratory equipment, and
audio-visual resources significantly enhances students’ understanding of
biological concepts, stimulates interest, and improves academic performance.
The study also identified challenges affecting effective Biology instruction,
including inadequate supply, poor maintenance, and limited utilization of
available instructional materials in some schools. The results underscore the
critical role of instructional materials in promoting active learning and
improving instructional delivery in Biology classrooms. The study therefore
recommends increased provision of instructional materials by relevant
stakeholders, regular training of teachers on effective utilization, and
improved funding for science education to enhance the teaching and learning of
Biology in secondary schools in the area.
